An ultra-popular city scheme handing out free reusable nappies to new mums and dads has been expanded, after an initial release of 400 places sold out within hours.

The City of Greater Geelong has boosted its Modern Reusable Nappy Program, allowing residents to learn how to use reusable nappies and receive a free nappy pack from local supplier Evia Collective – containing a wet bag and five reusable nappies.

The city added new workshops – on April 2 and 5 – after the first release of 400 spots sold out within hours.

Deputy Mayor Trent Sullivan said the initiative would help the city achieve its goal of diverting all residential waste from landfill by 2030.

“Nappies make up close to 10 per cent of the overall waste we send to landfill from our red bins, and each nappy can take up to 500 years to break down,” Cr Sullivan said.

“We’ve heard from many parents who are passionate about wanting to protect the environment for their children, and we’re excited to support Geelong families to give reusable nappies a go.”

One child uses an average of 6000 to 7000 disposable nappies during their nappy-wearing life – making up about one tonne of landfill waste, the equivalent weight of a car.

Stacey Law of Evia Collective said modern reusable nappies have come a long way in recent years.

“Gone are the days of soaking and folding terry cloth squares. Reusable modern cloth nappies are simple to use, easy to launder, fit well and come in a range of fun colours and patterns to suit everyone,” Ms Law said.

“They are better for your wallet, your baby and the environment and we’d love more local families to try them.”
