Avalon Airshow bosses are working closely with police and airport executives following a major security scare at the site on Thursday afternoon.

Due to be held March 28-30, Airshow boss Justin Giddings said the safety of patrons was paramount.

“Whilst the incident was unrelated to the Airshow, we are working closely with Victoria Police and Avalon Airport management to ensure the safety and security of everyone attending Avalon 2025,” he said.

“We commend the quick actions of passengers and crew regarding the security incident at Avalon Airport yesterday.”

A 17-year-old boy fronted court on Friday after being charged with eight offences, including unlawfully taking control of an aircraft, possession of a firearm, and bomb hoax, after he allegedly boarded a Jetstar flight with a shotgun.

Airport chief executive Ari Suss said he was confident security concerns would not derail the Airshow.

Mr Suss said he anticipated organisers would review their own security needs “in light of what’s unfolded”.

“With good planning and sensitivity to what’s unfolded in the last 24 hours, we’ll sit down with them to ensure the event proceeds and is a success,” Mr Suss said.

Regarding the airport’s own security, Mr Suss said a visible increase would ensure “peace of mind”.

“We’ve responded to that heightened sense of awareness and sensitivity that the community has … and are taking some steps with regards to the perimeter and other parts of the airport,” he said.

“That additional security will give people some comfort.”

There was a strong security presence in the terminal Friday morning.

Mr Suss said hero passenger Barry Clark, who helped detain the 17-year-old, had been offered “free tickets for life”.
