A Surf Coast man who showed “unpredictable behaviour” when he consumed alcohol, fronted the County Court in Melbourne on Tuesday for assault-related charges.

Christian Maxwell Jackson, 54, was found guilty of two charges of common law assault and one charge of damage to property and was acquitted on a number of charges of rape and serious assault in the Country Court in Geelong last month.

Judge Frances Hogan, who presided over the plea hearing and trial described Jackson as a “controlling, abusive bully” who had a significant drinking problem.

Crown prosecutor Andrew McKenry said sometime in 2014, after Jackson had consumed red wine with an unknown quantity of unknown tablets, he damaged the victim’s car in a “terrifying” ordeal after she told him she was going to stay at her mother’s house.

“The accused came into the garage and caused damage to the vehicle, breaking the windscreen and damaging the side mirror of the car,” Mr McKenry said.

In a separate incident in 2016, Jackson was with the victim when he became drunk and aggressive and started to degrade the victim, calling her a “sl--”.

The court was told the victim tried to get away from him and wanted to call her father to get her out of the situation.

“As the complainant tried to call her father, the accused jumped on top of her,” Mr McKenry said.

Mr McKenry said Jackson was physically grabbing at the complainant and yelling at her and was pushing and shoving the victim.

During the incident, the court was told Jackson grabbed the victim’s phone and “squeezed it” causing the phone to smash.

In a victim impact statement read out to the court, the complainant said she was “traumatised” by the incident and “never felt so empty with no direction”.

Jackson’s lawyer Ian Hill KC said the offending on both of those occasions was not premeditated, and that he acted spontaneously while affected by alcohol.

Mr Hill said there were two Christian Jacksons – one who affected by alcohol who was before the court, and the other, when sober, a hardworking individual who is well respected.

Judge Hogan said although the physical events could be of short duration, the emotional consequences could be long.

Jackson previously lived on the Surf Coast and is now residing in Noosa Heads, working as a commercial tour boat operator.

Jackson will be assessed to see if he is suitable to undertake a community corrections order and will be sentenced in court next month.
