2023 VCE results: Geelong’s top performers revealed

After years of schooling and hours of studying, thousands of VCE students across Geelong and the Surf Coast have received their final results.
From 7am on Monday, students found out their Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) and study scores for their VCE subjects.
Geelong College’s Agnes Ambrose achieved an ATAR of 99.9.
She also received a study score of 50 in both English and legal studies as well as a 49 in French.
The 18-year-old said she was “very nervous” before she opened her results.
“My hands were shaking … but I was quite surprised, I’m very happy,” she said.
Ms Ambrose studied English, English literature, maths methods, legal studies and French during year 12 and completed history as an accelerated subject last year.
She is hoping to study in Melbourne next year.
“I’m hoping to study a diploma of French and then study law as a juris doctor postgraduate,” Ms Ambrose said.
She thanked her teachers for all the work they put in to support their students.
“They’ve really helped me deal with the stress of year 12 and the stress of wanting to do really well,” she said.
Fellow Geelong College student Sebastian Poliness achieved an ATAR of 99.1.
The 18-year-old said he was nervous on Sunday night but woke up feeling “quite calm” on Monday morning.
He said he was relieved to be finishing secondary school but predicted he would “miss it” as well.
Mr Poliness said he hoped to study philosophy and law next year in either Sydney, Melbourne or Canberra.
Geelong High School’s dux Alex Aidt achieved an ATAR of 93.6 as well as a perfect study score of 50 in theatre studies.
“I’m feeling very accomplished,” he said.
“I worked very hard for the last two years and did the best I could,” he said.
Mr Aidt was involved in school productions during his time at Geelong High and thanked his teachers for their ongoing support.
He is hoping to study a double degree in education and music at Monash University next year.
More than 51,000 students across Victoria received their VCE results on Monday, 650 who achieved perfect study scores of 50 and more than 21,000 of 40 or above.
Meanwhile, education expert Jacqui Peters said for some, the ATAR would mean entry into a university course of choice, but for many, it would be a number they will “agonise” over as it wasn’t what they expected or wanted.
Dr Peters, a Deakin University school of education lecturer, said it was important to keep in mind ATARs were simply a ranking designed to determine entry into university study.
“If you didn’t get the score you wanted for the course you dreamt of, there will be other pathways into that course, or other courses not yet considered,” she said.
“Some might not even need the ATAR to pursue their dreams.
“Whatever pathway you choose, your ATAR will not determine your future.”

Principle Nick Adamou said he was “extremely proud” of the “outstanding effort” of all students.
“All credit goes to the teachers and staff and the programs that we provide,” he said.
“We do everything we can for these kids and we love what we do.”
At the college, 40 per cent of students received an ATAR of 70 or above, 16 per cent of 60 or above and 22 per cent of 50 and above.

St Joseph’s College
Principal Tony Paatsch said he was “very proud” of all the college’s year 12 graduates.
“We congratulate the 22 students, 11.8 per cent of the cohort, who achieved an ATAR of over 90,” he said.
“This morning our college dux, Henry Beggs, was presented to the college staff after which he thanked and acknowledged the teachers who encouraged him throughout the last 6 years.”

Acting principal Rick Geall said the college took “immense pride” in the efforts of every year 12 student.
Of the 168 students who completed year 12 VCE at the college, 17 received an ATAR of 90 or above and 30 per cent of its students were in the top 20 per cent of high achievers across the state.
