Some of regional Victoria’s brightest young football prodigies are set to hit the turf for their first representative clash this weekend, with Vic Country facing Vic Metro in the under-16s national championships.

Geelong has been well represented in the Vic Country team, with six players selected in the 28-player squad.

Falcons U16s coach Chris Lynch has broken down each player’s strengths and what to look for in the national carnival.

Josh Lindsay

DOB: April 7, 2007

Height: 182cm

Club: Newtown & Chilwell

Position: Inside Midfielder

Lynch says: Josh is an inside midfielder, he’s an elite prospect (for 2025). He is also playing out at Geelong Grammar in the APS, he’ll start as an inside midfielder for the Vic Country team. Josh is a Rolls Royce operator, he’s a really good decision maker, he’s really clean, he’s pretty powerful in the contest and is a really smooth mover as well. He’ll accumulate plenty of the ball, he’ll probably be more of a midfielder that can play half back rather than going forward, his ball use is really good at setting up the team’s ball movement. He’ll start inside midfield and will be an important piece in the engine room.

Giuseppe Posterino

DOB: February 12, 2007

Height: 175cm

Club: St Joseph’s

Position: Small forward

Lynch says: Giuseppe is an electric small forward that is dynamic in his game style. He is really skilful with the ball in his hand, but he is also really good with his pressure when he doesn’t have possession. He’s got elite speed and he uses the ball really well, he plays that small forward role really well, tackles hard and he’s quite good overhead for his size as well. He’s a bit more of a crumbing forward but he does pop up occasionally with some really dynamic things.

Harry Morphet

DOB: January 8, 2007

Height: 175cm

Club: Leopold

Position: Forward/Midfielder

Lynch says: Harry is a really classy player, he’s a great decision maker and a strong leader. He’ll play mainly forward but he can go play inside mid as well, he’s got some real upside. Long term he’ll become a really good inside midfielder, I think he’ll be looking to get some inside midfield time throughout the carnival as well. He’s powerful out of the contest and uses it really well, and he spreads pretty hard forward in a good way. He’s got a bit of a lighter frame but as he grows he’ll turn into a great midfielder with good skills.

Ben Rongdit

DOB: May 10, 2007

Height: 183cm

Club: Colac

Position: Rebounding Defender

Lynch says: He’s a really exciting half back flanker, he’s a Next Generation Academy player with Geelong and he’s got unbelievable upside. He does some incredible things on the field. Ben has great athleticism, can take a great overhead mark and is really clean below the knees as well. A beautiful left foot as well, he does some crazy things on the field. Ben plays more of an intercepting marking, rebounding defensive role rather than a lockdown role, that’s where he’ll play for the national carnival too. He reads the game quite well and he just takes off when he’s got the ball in hand and he’s hard to stop. When he’s marking it overhead he’s playing his best footy.

Geordie Richardson

DOB: May 1, 2007

Height: 188cm

Club: Geelong Amateur

Position: Tall Forward

Lynch says: Geordie is a really versatile third tall forward, he’s still growing and filling out but he’s probably not quite big enough to command that full forward role. In saying that, he’s a great marking target, he’s really good overhead and takes a lot of marks inside the forward 50. He’s going to be a really good prospect, he’s a year 10 player at Geelong Grammar playing in the First 18 there. He’s got a great set shot routine, and he gets a lot of shots at goal because he’s really smart in that forward line. But his versatility might mean he gets thrown back behind the footy, but his best football is played in the forward line.
