A pair of CBD power outages left part of town in darkness on Thursday morning, causing confusion on the roads.

Power outages spanning a city block around Little Malop St between Union and Swanston streets as well as a second further down on Yarra St plunged the CBD into darkness just before 5am.

Traffic lights at the busy intersection of Ryrie and Yarra streets were dead about 6am, with motorists forced to give way to each other.

Offices in the busy business district were without power, with some workers unable to access their buildings.

Some 334 customers were affected at one point.

Powercor confirmed it began progressively restoring power from 5am, with all power back on by 7.45am.
