The legend of the small forward dubbed ‘Gryanel Miersi’ is growing exponentially with every elite game he plays.
Gryan Miers, who played game 100 for Geelong in the side’s outstanding win over Essendon, was the target of a viral social media post that compared the 24 year old to one of soccer’s greatest ever players in Lionel Messi.
While his teammate Tanner Bruhn said he felt bad for SEN’s Gerard Whateley, who was falsely quoted with the comparison, he said Miers was having a dominant patch.
“I’ve seen too much of that this week, I feel a bit bad for poor Gerard,” he laughed after the Cats’ 77-point win.
“Sure, why not, good comparison, he loves it.
“He’s had an outstanding season so far, the work he puts in is unbelievable, he’s always at the club working so for him to be getting the recognition that he is, it’s great.”
Miers had 26 disposals, two goal assists and one goal in the milestone drubbing, with the Cats kicking the opening seven goals in the first quarter to set up the massive win.
It was Miers’ third straight game with at least 25 disposals, following a 27-touch effort against the Swans in round 16, and a career-high 32 disposals last week against North Melbourne.
Coach Chris Scott said during the week he was eager to see Miers earn his first All Australian blazer, with the Cat now up to 30 goal assists to lead the competition.
Cats ruck Rhys Stanley, who had 28 hit outs to go with 12 disposals, said Miers’ growth in 2023 had been impressive to watch from within the side.
“The quality he has just oozes out, he’s such a selfless player who just runs some unbelievable patterns and goes all day,” he said.
“There’s no one who really works harder than him, he’s happy to put his head down and just work for the team, he’s that sort of bloke.
“He does an amount of work for the team, pushing up and back, putting pressure on all over the ground, and it’s great he’s getting some recognition because I think all the small forwards in the competition would tell you it’s a pretty selfless role.
“I reckon if you ask him (about the comparison) he’d say absolutely he is.”
