First look at Port Douglas’ vegan Asian fusion restaurant

Port Douglas’ first plant based Asian fusion restaurant has opened with locals and visitors trying vegan versions of traditional Asian meals.

Port Douglas’ first plant based Asian fusion restaurant — Bam Pow — has opened and lived up to its name, according to its owners.

The restaurant has been open for a month and has a driving focus on freshness and creating a relaxed atmosphere, co-owner Ethan Willard said.

He is a chef and said he was trying to create a menu that appealed to a broad market.

“We steer away from vegan food that tastes vegan. This food is plant based and fresh and just tastes delicious … it doesn’t taste like what it’s not,” he said.

The venue is licenced and will soon feature a list of wines and Japanese beers both on tap and in bottles.

Mr Willard and his partner have had a successful plant based business in the past in Victoria, closing it only to start Bam Pow in Port Douglas.

“We’re a tight knit staff of five that are all very eager and passionate to get our food out there,” he said.

Bam Pow on Davidson St is open Wednesday to Sunday.
