Emergency crews are still on-scene at a major Gold Coast hinterland road after a vehicle plunged 50 metres down an embankment and burst into flames.
Vertical rescue technicians abseiled down the steep gully with fire extinguishers to reach the burning wreckage on Springbrook Road as emergency crews launched a major rescue operation.
A Queensland Fire department spokesman said emergency crews were called to Gold Coast Springbrook Road at 10:35am and were still on scene as of 12pm.
He said three fire and rescue crews and two rural fire services from Mudgeeraba were called out and two vertical rescue technicians abseiled down with fire extinguishers and landed at the base at 11:30am.
“Our crews have abseiled down into the gully,” the spokesman said.
He said once the fire was extinguished, the rescuers could commence the search operation.
He said an occupant of the vehicle had been identified and drones had since been deployed by the crews for an “extensive search” of the area.
A Queensland Ambulance spokesperson said: “QAS have identified an occupant of the vehicle.”
A Queensland Police Service spokesperson said: “Police are on scene following a vehicle fire in Gold Coast this morning, 29 November.”
