The Fire will set the Townsville Entertainment and Convention centre ablaze in an historic WNBL first on Sunday.

The Townsville side has made the call to open up additional seating at the venue, affectionately termed the Fire Pit, allocating more tickets than ever before for Sunday’s game two of the WNBL grand final series against Bendigo Spirit.

The decision to open up more seating at the venue has come after the first allocation of tickets sold out in less than 24 hours.

The arena’s capacity will now stretch beyond 5000 spectators for the first time this season.

At lunch time Tuesday, an additional 1100 tickets went on sale.

General manager of the Townsville Fire Pascoe said the first round of tickets went on sale midday on Monday, where most sold out by 8pm that night and all the tickets were gone by Tuesday morning.

“We’ve never opened the whole arena up, it will take the capacity to around 5400 people,” she said.

“It’s a well-known fact that we have the absolute best fans in the league and they’re showing why in the last 24 hours.

“It’s really exciting, not only for the players, but it’s really exciting for the community.”

Ms Pascoe said the decision was made to open up the seats to allow as many fans as possible to see the girls chase their fifth championship.

“The Fire Pit is already a fortress and we think come Sunday with almost five and a half thousand fans in it, it will be something no one has ever experienced,” she said.

“It’s a great sign for women’s sport.”

While tickets were flying out the door in Townsville, the Fire’s playing squad and coaching staff were flying out of the city bound for Victoria.
