Feds on board as Taskforce heads to Melbourne and a meeting with Gill

With the impressive business case under their arm, representatives of the Tasmanian Government and Taskforce are ready to present the push to AFL House.

Labor promises AFL team for Tasmania

TASMANIA’S push for a club in the big league will hit AFL House this week, and with support from the Federal Government.

Premier Peter Gutwein and the Tasmanian AFL Taskforce chairman Brett Godfrey will fly to Melbourne to meet AFL chief executive Gillon McLachlan to present and discuss the AFL Licence Taskforce Business Plan 2019, which was released publicly on February 7.

The business case outlines how a Tasmanian club would be economically viable while bringing economic benefits to both the state and the AFL.

The case has been widely well received and has also been endorsed by Federal Minister for Sport, Tasmanian Senator Richard Colbeck.

“I am delighted the Taskforce report has confirmed what many of us have thought for a long time – that a Tasmanian team stacks up and Tasmanians will support it,” Senator Colbeck said.

“There remains only one obstacle – the granting of a licence by the AFL.

“I will continue to lobby the league to stump up a licence for a Tasmanian team which now should be a priority.

“Tasmanians, as spirited AFL supporters, deserve their place in the national competition.”

The Taskforce hopes to receive a provisional licence from the AFL with a plan to join the competition by 2025, playing home games both in Hobart and Launceston with a training base in the capital city.
