A California fire captain attacked online as being a ‘DEI hire’ has been found dead after being repeatedly stabbed in her home.
Firefighter Rebecca Marodi, 49, was found with multiple wounds after San Diego County Sheriff’s Office personnel reached her Ramona home around 9pm, the agency said in a news release. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
“Investigators suspect that the victim knew the perpetrator and are treating this case as a potential domestic violence incident,” the sheriff’s office said.The motive and further information around Marodi’s death remain unclear.
Prior to her death, a misinformation campaign on X suggested Marodi and several other high-ranking California Fire officers were “DEI hires” despite their extensive credentials and celebrated careers, leading some to believe that a target had been placed on her back.
There is no evidence to suggest that these claims are true.
Authorities have not announced the arrest of a suspect as of Wednesday night.
Marodi worked for the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection for over 30 years, serving in Riverside, San Bernardino and San Diego counties.
“It is with great sadness that CAL FIRE reports the off-duty death of Fire Captain Rebecca ‘Becky’ Marodi,” the department said in a statement this week. “The tragic loss of Captain Marodi is mourned by her family, friends, and her CAL FIRE family.”
A neighbor told KTLA she hadn’t noticed any commotion at Marodi’s home.
“They’d be mowing, they’d be doing wood, gardening … you know, the usual stuff,” Monika Evans said. “Never saw any problems.”
Riverside sheriff’s officials, along with Cal Fire, said in a joint statement Tuesday that Marodi’s death is a “profound loss” for her loved ones and colleagues.
“Her legacy of mentorship, service, and dedication will be felt for years to come,” the two departments said.
