Coronavirus: How many stranded Aussies still need to get home?

POLICE and the State Government have acknowledged a high level of compliance among Tasmanians in quarantine, but not everyone is doing the right thing.

As of Saturday afternoon, police had conducted more than 850 checks on people across the state since Wednesday night.

The enforcement measures involve officers physically going to an address to see whether those required to self-isolate are complying.

Premier Peter Gutwein said while the vast majority of Tasmanians were obeying instructions, 18 were not.

“We’re currently working through those individual circumstances and I want to be absolutely clear, anybody that was found to be blatantly breaching those rules will be charged and summonsed,’’ he said.

Tasmania Police Acting Deputy Commissioner Jonathan Higgins said there had been a high level of compliance and understanding of requirements, with no penalties yet imposed.

“But we continue to get reports of people flouting the requirements in some public places and it must be clear that this is not acceptable,’’ he said.
