Premier Peter Gutwein has confirmed borders between Tasmania and New South Wales will be relaxed from 12.01am this Friday, November 6.
Two unexplained cases in the last 28 days was enough to convince Public Health officials and the Deputy State Controller it is safe for people to enter Tasmania from NSW without quarantine.
“Travellers coming into Tasmania from NSW from Friday will be able to enter our state without quarantine, however they will still be subject to health screening at our air and sea ports, including being asked to have a COVID test if necessary,” Mr Gutwein said.
“Cases numbers in Victoria are also very low, with no new cases in recent days and several complex outbreaks appearing to be controlled.”
The State government maintains its hopes to reopen to Victoria on December 1 with an earlier opening possible, backed by rapidly declining case numbers in recent weeks.
“Public Health will provide advice on the prospect of an earlier first step of enabling safe home quarantine for people travelling from Victoria to Tasmania in the coming weeks,” Mr Gutwein
“I will continue to keep Tasmanians informed on this matter, as Victoria is our closest neighbour and home to many Tasmanians’ families and friends.
“Keeping Tasmanians safe is our priority and we will continue to take a responsible approach to managing COVID at our borders, informed by Tasmania’s Public Health officials”
