Construction workers eagerly await announcement of ‘screwdriver-ready’ projects from State Government

The Premier will soon unveil “the most aggressive construction program in Tasmania’s history” as he looks to rebuild the state’s economy — and tradies are glad to be getting back on the tools.

WORK to determine which infrastructure projects will be brought forward as part of an unprecedented construction program are being finalised, with an announcement due next week.

Premier Peter Gutwein said he expected to unveil “the most aggressive construction program in Tasmania’s history” to aid in the state’s recovery from coronavirus.

“I’m certain that there will be strong interest in this,” he said.

“This will be the first major step in our rebuild program.

“I have every confidence that by building off this base we will get through this.”

Mr Gutwein said it was planned that he would announce the program next week when parliament returns.

Master Builders Tasmania executive director Matthew Pollock said building and construction was one of the industries worst hit by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“It has been proven from previous downturns, that it takes four times longer for the building and construction industry to recover than the rest of the economy,’’ he said.

“It’s encouraging to see the government answering the call to bring forward screwdriver-ready projects in support of its plan to rebuild a stronger economy.

“Bringing projects forward which support businesses of all sizes and in all regions is crucial to safeguard the of thousands of jobs, and businesses in the building and construction industry.”

Braddon Labor MP Shane Broad said targeted investment in infrastructure projects in the region would stimulate the economy and provide local businesses with confidence.
