The North Queensland Cowboys held a stakeholder meeting in Cairns on Thursday night as they prepare to lodge a development application for a $30m high performance centre at West Barlow Park.
The Community, Development and High Performance Centre, which received a $15m funding commitment from the federal government, will be home to the Cowboys’ NRLW team and Northern Pride, and will be available to other Far North teams, the Cowboys said.
The stakeholder meeting included council and government representatives, commercial partners and sports administrators and coincided with a Cowboys board meeting on increased investment in the Far North.
“As we move closer to breaking ground for the (centre) we believe it was important for the boards of both the Football and Leagues Clubs to meet in Cairns to discuss our ever-evolving plans for growth in Far North Queensland,” Cowboys chairman Lewis Ramsay said.
Mr Ramsay said the Cowboys were preparing to lodge a development application with Cairns Regional Council “in the near future”, and said they hoped to commence construction on the facility in early 2026.
“We are committed to building a facility which delivers lasting community and sporting outcomes for the regions,” he said.
“Our stakeholder meeting on Thursday night was productive and reinforced the strong local support for our vision.”
