A kangaroo’s ill-fated attempt to cross one of Queensland’s busiest roads has left a man in hospital.
The man in his 30s was rushed to Gold Coast University Hospital after he was hit by a car moments after striking a kangaroo on the M1.
Emergency services were called to the scene near exit 62 at Helensvale just before 9pm on Monday, a Queensland Fire Department spokesman said.
The Queensland Ambulance Service reported the incident as a vehicle and pedestrian incident.
A QAS spokesman said a man reportedly got out of his car after it struck a kangaroo, and was hit by a car.
The man sustained abdominal, back and arm injuries and was taken to hospital in a stable condition, the QAS spokesman said.
A spokeswoman for the RSPCA said the organisation was not notified of the incident.
“Police are investigating a traffic crash at Helensvale last night, February 3,” a Queensland Police Service spokesman said.
“Around 8.40pm, a Toyota RAV4 travelling southbound on the Pacific Motorway collided with a kangaroo.
“Initial investigations indicate that the vehicle stopped in lane four, the driver exited the vehicle and walked into lane three.
“At around 8.50pm, a Hyundai Veloster collided with the RAV4 driver. The Veloster pulled over and assisted.
“The driver of the RAV4, a 32-year-old man, was transported to Gold Coast University Hospital.”
