Woman arrested after alleged CBD assault, theft

A woman has been arrested after allegedly assaulting a Cairns store manager then allegedly stealing a bystander's phone in the city’s CBD.

A woman has been arrested after a short footchase with police after allegedly assaulting a store manager in the Cairns CBD.

Seven police cars responded after a woman allegedly assaulted a Grafton Street worker around 5.30pm on Tuesday, before allegedly stealing a bystanders phone in the Shield Street precinct.

A Cairns police officer said crews were passing by when the incident occurred.

“Police happened to be passing by at the time and arrested her for the assault,” he said.

As of Tuesday evening, the woman remained in police custody.
