Woman airlifted after head-on crash at East Palmerston 104km southwest of Cairns

A woman, 61, with leg injuries has been airlifted to hospital and three other patients transported by road ambulance after a head-on crash on Thursday morning.

Police have confirmed investigations are ongoing into a head-on crash which resulted in paramedics transporting four people to hospital including one woman by rescue helicopter on Thursday morning.

A Queensland Police Service spokesman said the crash occurred after 10am on Palmerston Highway, East Palmerston 104km south of Cairns.

“It would appear to be a collision between two Toyota camper vans,” he said.

“The driver of one van was a 62-year-old man, and his two passenger were a 61-year-old woman and a 30-year-old man.

“The driver and sole occupant of the other van was a 43-year-old man and all people involved were injured.

“Investigations are ongoing”.

A Queensland Ambulance Service spokeswoman confirmed paramedics treated multiple patients at the scene.

“One patient a female in her 60s with leg injuries has been airlifted to Innisfail Hospital, following a crash where two campervans collided,” she said.

“The other three patients are in a stable condition and were transported by road ambulance to Innisfail Hospital.”

A QPS spokeswoman said officers assisted paramedics at the crash scene.

“The call about a head-on crash between two vehicles came in at 10.18am,” she said.

“Police assisted Queensland Ambulance at the scene.”

She said it was understood the cars were off the road.

A spokeswoman for Queensland Fire and Emergency confirmed a crew from Innisfail had been in attendance since 10.45am.

“The crew at the road crash rescue have been assisting QAS but there were no entrapments,” she said.

“We understand QAS are treating and assessing multiple patients.”

It is understood the crash scene has been cleared.
