Lawyers are swapping the court room and their business suits for the water of Palm Cove and tight-fitting Lycra as they take on the Cairns Ironman 70.3 in support of COUCH.

Brendan O’Sullivan hasn’t been in the job a month at WGC Lawyers but already he’s proven he’s part of a team that puts others first.

An email from WGC before their new lawyer’s first day was all it took for Brendan to say yes to participating in this year’s Cairns Airport Ironman 70.3 teams event.

However, that was before he received “all” the information.

“I thought, ‘that sounds great. What a great initiative. We’ll go cycling; sounds wonderful. Let’s do it’,” he said.

“Then I was informed it would be for COUCH … and that it would be 90km.”

Like a real trooper Brendan put his initial shock about how far he will ride aside and is teaming up with lawyer Chloe Moes (swim) and paralegal and team captain Jillian Seaniger (run) who have both previously competed in the event.

“I think COUCH is a fantastic initiative especially for the fact they’ve recently lost their government funding, so now getting behind them is more important than ever,” he said.

His willingness to jump right in has earned him his teammates’ respect.

“I admire Brendan that he agreed to ride 90km before he even stepped foot in the building,”

Ms Moes joked.

WGC Lawyers has supported COUCH since 2016 and became Champions of COUCH donating $2700 this year.

It’s a deeply personal cause which was inspired by the late Greg Parr, a senior lawyer and passionate surf lifesaver, who was diagnosed with cancer.

In his honour, WGC directors Graham Dutton, Michael Huelin and Doug McKinstry

took on Ironman for the first time in 2016 and the company has competed ever since.

“Sadly, cancer is one of those diseases that touches everyone in some way or another.

Personally, I’ve lost two grandparents to cancer so I’m really proud to get behind COUCH and support them,” Ms Moes said.

Jillian has been an enthusiastic fundraiser with special T-shirts and stubby coolers created for

sale and even a workplace swear jar put in place, which is consistently attracting donations.

The trio has been putting in the training with Brendan logging 70-90km a week on the bike and Chloe swimming in the pool three times a week.

“I grew up swimming competitively. The drive is to prove to myself that I can still swim 1.9km,” Chloe said.

“I finished the swim leg in 2019 in 38 minutes so I’m just hoping to beat that again.

For Brendan, he’s looking to finish the 90km route in under four hours, while Jillian is an experienced runner and ready for the 21.1km course, is focused on raising as much money as possible for FNQ’s cancer-impacted community.

There is one certainty though, their WGC colleagues will be cheering them on all the way.
