A 20-year-old Atherton woman has tragically died after her vehicle struck a tree and went down an embankment at Kamerunga, in Cairns, early Saturday morning.
Two people were injured in the crash that closed Cairns’ western arterial road at the Stoney Creek bridge.
Fire crews responded to the crash at the intersection of Kamerunga Rd and Romney St at 3.43am and found a woman trapped in the vehicle.
Emergency crews have now cleared the road.
The woman, the driver of a Mitsubishi Lancer, died at the scene.
A 22-year-old Smithfield man, a passenger in the vehicle, was transported to Cairns Hospital in a stable condition.
“We transported one male patient to Cairns Hospital in a stable condition … he had very minor soft tissue injuries,” a QAS spokeswoman said.
The Forensic Crash Unit is investigating the circumstances of the crash.
Police are appealing for anyone who may have seen the driver’s red Mitsubishi Lancer in the area at the time, or who may have relevant dashcam footage, to contact them.
