WHILE many dads will be celebrating Father’s Day with a barbecue Matt Currey and his son Alex could be out assisting at a search and rescue, car crash or a heavy weather event.
But Mr Currey, 49, wouldn't have it any other way.
He said when Alex, 18, revealed he wanted to follow in his (steel capped) footsteps and join the Cairns State Emergency Services Unit, he was delighted.
Mr Currey has been in the role of Cairns SES group leader for three years after joining eight years ago.
He said he felt “proud and excited,” when Alex, who is studying to be an electrician, wanted to join him.
“When we moved to Cairns from Western Australia eight years ago I joined to give back to the community,” he said.
“I’m proud Alex has decided to as well.”
Alex said he completed his SES induction earlier this year.
“It’s good to know the guy in charge,” he said.
“If we get called out on Father’s Day, I’m ready to be part of the unit and respond with my dad.”
Meanwhile at Cairns Hospital, first-time dad Carlos Frey was jubilant about the birth of his son Dennis earlier this week.
He joked that he hoped his first Father’s Day could involve a little sleep.
Together with his wife, Judelyn, 29, Mr Frey, 31, said Dennis was the light of their lives.
“I am completely, totally excited, it’s the greatest present we have ever got,” the Mutchilba resident said.
“We will celebrate Father’s Day with a sleep-in if he lets us.”
