Queensland Police have clarified reports of suspicious behaviour near a Cairns school in what has been confirmed as a misunderstanding.
Social media groups were on high alert following allegations a man had chased students and was attempting to lure them into his car near Trinity Anglican School’s Kewarra Beach Campus.
On Wednesday, parents and carers of students studying at the school received an email from the education provider notifying them of incidents involving a middle-aged man, reported to be driving in the area.
“This individual has been following children, including some from our campus, and has reportedly chased them, attempted to lure them to his car, and, on at least one occasion, displayed a knife,” the email read.
“It has also been noted that he has been seen near our campus.
“This matter has been reported to the police and is being discussed in several Facebook posts. “Please remain vigilant, discuss this concern with your children, and consider any necessary adjustments to their routines to ensure their safety.”
However on Thursday, a Queensland Police Service spokeswoman confirmed there was no threat to the public.
“Police are aware of reports of suspicious behaviour at Kewarra Beach,” the spokeswoman said.
“Initial information indicates a staff member at a (nearby) building development confronted a number of people following trespassing and wilful damage incidents earlier this month.
“Police are making inquiries into claims made on social media.
“There is no threat to the public. Anyone with information is urged to contact police.
“Officers are continuing to make inquiries and are conducting proactive patrols in the area.”
In a statement, TAS echoed the QPS statement acknowleding the tresspassing and wilful damage incidents.
“No information indicates that the above-stated trespassing and damage are related to TAS students,” the statement read.
“This is a community matter being managed by QPS.”
