Time capsules and technology will be at the forefront of a Far North primary school’s milestone anniversary celebrations.
Aloomba State School, situated 29.5km south of Cairns, will celebrate 125 years of history on June 1 with a special celebration, including opening and burying two separate time capsules.
Teaching principal Robyn Corbett, who joined the school as a teacher in 1992, said students would open a time capsule which was buried during the school’s 100-year celebration in 1999.
“I was there when we put the first time capsule in, so I know exactly what’s in it,” Ms Corbett said.
“The grade 1s and 2s of that year wrote a letter to this year’s class of grade 1s and 2s, wondering what school would be like now.”
Ms Corbett said one of the school’s oldest former students, a man in his 90s, would also be in attendance.
“One of our previous students who’s 93 years old, will be there,” she said.
“So we’ll have our oldest and youngest students cut a celebratory cake.”
Other celebrations will include a school tour for former pupils and a traditional pine cone derby.
“Students attach wheels to a block of wood, decorate it and race it,” she said.
“We’ve done that a lot over the years so it’s going to be part of the day.”
Ms Corbett said the school had seen major changes in technology throughout its 125-year history.
“The teaching part hasn’t changed much and lots of different (teaching) programs have come and gone, but the technology has grown so much,” she said.
