Melbourne property tycoon Tim Gurner’s plans for a $60m luxury resort hit a hurdle, so he went back to his initial idea – that he’d like a holiday retreat at Port Douglas – and now the revised development has been approved.
Mr Gurner has plans for four stylish homes at the blue ribbon address of 69-73 Murphy St, a former quarry site with commanding views of Four Mile Beach.
Mr Gurner had initially proposed a development with 16 villas and 18 hotel rooms, which attracted protests from local tourism operators about its height.
The 2833sq m block will have four buildings accessed via a common driveway.
The two buildings to the south will be split-level and single-storey, and two buildings to the rear will be four storeys high.
Mr Gurner recently changed the application, scrapping the community management scheme common property proposal, and now each dwelling would be on its own allotment.
Mr Gurner’s December 2020 development application stumbled because it required the acquisition of part of the adjoining road reserve, and he chose not to pursue it.
The four homes would be for short-term accommodation.
The Port Douglas project is a relatively small development for Mr Gurner, who has undertaken major up-market high-rise projects in Brisbane and Melbourne, along with boutique projects.
