Teenage boy, 15, facing charges over alleged sexual assault of woman in carpark

A teenage boy was arrested after allegedly assaulting a woman in a Cairns business carpark during the day, then attempting a break-in shortly afterwards.

The 15-year-old Manunda boy is alleged to have sexually assaulted the 26-year-old woman in a carpark of a Jensen Street business about 12pm on Sunday, January 12.

It will be further alleged the boy then attempted to break into an Anderson St business a short time later.

Officers from Cairns Criminal Investigation Branch have now charged the 15-year-old Manunda boy after executing a warrant at an Anderson Street property on Tuesday morning, January 14.

Police are alleging the boy had been involved in other incidents within the past week including a stolen vehicle and the attempted break-in of a Trinity Beach business.

The 15-year-old boy has been charged with two counts of attempted enter premises, two counts of breach of bail and one count each of sexual assault, unlawful use of motor vehicle, and possess unsafe syringe.

He is due to appear in Cairns Childrens Court on Wednesday, January 15.

This comes as stolen cars, burglaries and attempted break-ins have prompted calls from Far North Queensland leaders for additional police resources, with one long standing MP says he’s never seen crime so bad.
