A routine traffic stop has led to the discovery of a motherlode illegal weapons cache, including handguns, rifles and a Japanese style samurai sword.
Police allege a motorcycle being ridden erratically led to the discovery of the weapons by Far North Tactical Crime Squad and Ravenshoe Police at a Tablelands property last month.
According to Officer in Charge of Cairns Highway Patrol, Senior Sergeant Craig Johnson, extensive investigations led police to a Millstream property, where four handguns, seven rifles, multiple knives and other weapons were located and seized.
“Part of the investigation showed us number plates on the vehicle were false,” he said.
“Investigations to those number plates led us to the address, the search was conducted to link the motorcycle to the owner and then these other offences came to light.”
Senior Sergeant Johnson said a 34-year-old man had been charged with 21 offences following the February 27 raid.
Methylamphetamine, cannabis, including plants and drug utensils were also found at the Millstream property.
Senior Sergeant Johnson said on February 11, an officer patrolling the Gillies Range Rd at Barrine noticed a motorcycle allegedly driving at 130km/h in a 100km/h zone.
The officer attempted to intercept the rider, who allegedly failed to stop for police.
He said it as unknown if the weapons had been used in any unsolved crimes.
A 34-year-old Gordonvale man was charged with multiple counts including unlawful possession of weapons category A, B or M, three counts of possess utensils, two counts of possessing dangerous drugs, one count each of unlawful possession of weapons Category D/H/R, and weapons offences regarding secure storage, dangerous operation of a vehicle, speeding and an evasion offence.
A 61-year-old Millstream woman was also charged with one count each of possess dangerous drugs and producing dangerous drugs.
Both the man and woman are expected to appear before Atherton Magistrates Court on March 21.
