Developers are moving on plans to build one of the most architecturally striking office blocks in Cairns on the site of what was once an even more unusual building.

DEVELOPERS are moving on plans to build one of the most architecturally striking office blocks in Cairns on the site of what was once an even more unusual building.

Liral Holdings bought 102-104 McGregor Rd in Smithfield in a “part sale” from a related company for $685,000 in 2015.

Demolition crews had already torn down a bizarre golf ball-shaped space observatory that had not been used for years on the property next to James Cook University.

Mystery surrounded that structure, which at some stage had been painted with Aboriginal artwork, with university staff unsure of its history at the time of its demolition.

Its replacement is set to be eye-catching to say the least with a giant wishbone-shaped structure winging the building, and cascading greenery spilling across the floor-to-ceiling windows.

Cairns Regional Council granted preliminary approvals to the project in March last year – and now the developer is back with a final plan and high hopes of a big green tick.

Amendments in the plan include removal of references to a food and drink outlet and what was going to be a rooftop-deck dining area. The rooftop has been flagged for a “recreation area” with lift and stair access.

“The exterior of the building incorporates a high level of articulation, including a void that accentuates the entrance to the building, a ‘wishbone’ design element on the east and west elevations of the building as well as landscaping (including vertical and roof top),” the application continued.

“The proposed construction of the development also incorporates a range of materials to minimise bulk and result in an aesthetically pleasing form appropriate for the site …

“Landscaping of the site and development is proposed to include a combination of vines and hanging plants, accent plants, shrubs and ground covers and larger trees to add scale and soften the built form.”

The new application gives a nod to the rising popularity of cycling with 16 secured bicycle and scooter spaces set aside for a new “bicycle share scheme”.
