Bargain hunters and shopaholics flocked to stores around the city as the biggest sale event on the year kicked off yesterday.

Thousands of shoppers took advantage of the Boxing Day sales period this year with saving of up to 80 per cent across Cairns shopping centres and retailers.

Shoppers Zara Johnstone, 17, and Katie Phillips, 16, knew exactly what they were after this Boxing Day.

“We wanted Peter [Alexander] for sure,” Ms Phillips said.

“All the Christmas pyjamas, that was the plan,” Ms Johnstone added.

The sleepwear giant had lines snaking around the corner with up to 50 per cent off its coveted Christmas and limited edition collection pyjamas.

“We had a pretty big line before we even opened,” sales assistant Tanaisha Bradley said.

“Everything is going from the shelves.”

Ms Bradley urged customers to get in quick.

“Once it’s gone, it’s gone – whatever we have now, if it leaves, we won’t be getting it back,” she said.

Adelaide resident Phil Friscic on holiday in Cairns said baggage allowance didn’t stop him and his wife from taking part in the sales.

“We’ll get it in somewhere, don’t worry about that. We’ll chuck it in or just get rid of some old clothes to make things easier,” he said.

Mr Friscic said he had been impressed with this year’s offerings.

“It’s been really good, heaps of shops, heaps of variety and good food too,” he said.

“The credit card will let me know later, but it’s been good because it’s been a lot cheaper and we’ve saved a lot of money.”

Outlet store DFO Cairns opened with a one day deal of 50 per cent storewide at luxury retailer Oroton and up to 80 per cent off at kitchen supply store House.

At Cairns Central more than 200,000 customers are expected to walk through the doors this week alone.

“Boxing Day is typically one of our busiest days of the year and we are anticipating the same for today, with the majority of stores expected to be running strong sales,” centre manager Ms Christe-Lee Jackson said.

Top deals on offer included 70 per cent off Myer cookware, 50 per cent off selected items at Bed Bath N Table and 50 per cent off laser hair removal and skin treatments at Laser Clinics Australia.

Sales will remain in store throughout the week for most retailers.
