Grey skies and showers could not dampen the excitement for Port Douglas Carnivale, which kicked off with a selection of events on Friday.
The iconic festival begun with The Longest Lunch followed by live music events at The Port Douglas Yacht Club and Spiegeltent and the Macrossan Street Parade.
Helen Farquhar travelled from the Gold Coast for Carnivale, and said it was the sheer variety on offer which attracted her.
“There’s so many exciting events that you don’t get the opportunity to do where we come from,” Ms Farquhar said.
“We’re always certain to come for the Longest Lunch and the Spiegeltent, it’s always hilariously funny.
“There are so many other associated things like the art gallery at the Sugar Wharf, there’s always plenty to do.”
The Queensland Symphony Orchestra will unveil its world premiere of Symphony No. 3 The Great Barrier Reef, a classical music piece commissioned to highlight the health of the natural icon.
QSO Chief conductor Umberto Clerici said he was excited to take part in the Symphony Under the Stars initiative which will take place at Rex Smeal Park.
“We are going to play on a stage on a beach. It’s going to be a big party and a big celebration,” Mr Clerici said.
“Sometimes music or art can help people feel the danger rather than hear about it, so it’s a special piece because it makes a point that we need to all commit to saving this treasure.”
Other highlights include new additions The Paradise Picnic music showcase, Savour TNQ food celebration and entertainment extravaganza Temple of Fire.
