On the third anniversary of the sudden deaths of twin three-month-old boys in a Cairns unit, police have declared the crime as suspicious.
Cairns Police have appealed for information about the infants in the weeks before their deaths.
Detective Inspector Kevin Goan of the Far North Queensland Crime Group said police now believed the deaths were suspicious.
Investigations have been ongoing since emergency services were called to the Joan Street unit complex on the morning of December 13, 2021, where they boys were found unresponsive in a bedroom.
The boys, who were known to have special health needs, could not be revived and were declared dead at the home.
“We know these deaths had a significant impact on the community and we have never stopped investigating.”
He said Operation Tango Devonian included collecting statements from family members and other individuals.
“Following results of autopsies and some further information coming to light, we now believe the deaths to be suspicious of nature,” Detective Inspector Goan said.
“These deaths are very complex matters to investigate and the actual results of post-mortem, particularly with infants, can take many months to be completed.
“We are asking that anyone who had contact with the infants when they were living in the Joan Street area in 2021 or any person who knows anything about the tragic passing of those children to come forward with any information that they may have.
“I’m confident that people who were in the Joan Street area in Bungalow will be aware that these young twins were living in the area … and may recall the comings and goings of health professionals.
“These children were the subject of special needs care at the time and that features as a part of our ongoing investigations.”
