A woman in her 30s has been rescued from the Mulgrave River, south of Goldsborough, emergency services have confirmed.

According to a QAS spokeswoman, the woman had been hiking in the area yesterday and was reportedly driving home that night before her car was swept off the causeway.

“She was able to get out of the car and made her way onto an island, or patch of land in the river where she spent the night,” the spokeswoman said.

The woman was transported to Cairns hospital in a stable condition.

Earlier it was reported Swiftwater rescue teams had been called to Fisheries Bridge, 30km south of Cairns, about 7am following reports a man had become trapped in the water, however it was later confirmed a woman had been in distress.

QFES confirmed crews were on scene to assist with the rescue, however they could not confirm the number of people trapped.

A QAS spokeswoman confirmed crews were also on the scene.

“We have confirmed there are people there, however we can’t confirm the exact number at this stage,” the spokeswoman said.

“So far crews have reported they can see a male patient standing and waving, but there may be more.”

The spokeswoman confirmed Swiftwater Rescue had been called in to assist.

The woman, 36, has since been discharged from hospital.
