Two children alleged to have stolen a taxi while the driver was taking a break at a Cairns cab rank have been arrested.
Initial information from police indicated on Wednesday at 12pm a boy jumped in the driver seat of Taxi 91 and drove off while the driver was chatting to colleagues at the Lake St pick up point.
A 16-year-old Manunda boy was arrested later yesterday afternoon in the yard of a Stewart Street address in Edmonton.
The taxi was found abandoned near where the boy was located shortly before his arrest.
The boy had allegedly been involved in multiple other incidents over the last week, including stealing a vehicle from a Maytown Street address on May 21 before later driving the vehicle dangerously on the Bruce Highway.
The boy also allegedly stole a vehicle from a Longden Street address on May 17 before returning a short time later and stealing a second vehicle from the same address.
He has been charged with a total of 26 offences, including 15 break and enter/trespass related offences, and nine unlawful use of motor vehicle/dangerous operation related.
He has been refused bail and will appear before Cairns Childrens Court today, May 23.
A 15-year-old boy who was also allegedly involved in the theft of the taxi on May 22 has been charged with unlawful use of motor vehicle.
He was refused bail and will appear before Cairns Childrens Court today, May 23.
Cairns Taxis chairman of directors Dave Notaras said was taken aback when hearing about the incident.
“What is going on in the world,” he said.
“Those cars cost upward of $40,000 and it’s a reasonably new Camry that one, and the way insurance is today it is going to be very costly for the owner, he will be devastated.
“And of course the 12-year-olds will get a rap on the knuckles and see you later, I feel sorry for the coppers.
“Hopefully the cops can track it down from the GPS tracker and he probably would have left this phone in the car
“But gee this is terrible.”
