New Djabugay CEO Dennis Mirosevich confirms planning for Cultural Park to be completed in 2023

The future of a treasured Cairns Aboriginal cultural precinct is brighter as a new CEO reveals what is on the cards for the Smithfield facility. Read the details.

Exciting times lay ahead of the Djabugay Aboriginal Corporation as the timing for key decisions concerning the organisation’s future have arrived along with its new CEO, Dennis Mirosevich.

The shining announcement among those decisions concerns the future of the Tjapukai Aboriginal Cultural Park in Smithfield, which Mr Mirosevich confirmed planning for which will be completed by early next year, with refurbishment, redevelopment and reopening completed later in 2023.

“Governments at any level cannot provide funding for reopening the cultural centre due to the current world economic climate,” Mr Mirosevich said.

“In response, the Djabugay Nation has secured in-principle funding from investors and humanitarian organisations to rebuild, reopen or redevelop the cultural centre, to be bigger and better than it was.

“Furthermore, private investment funding has been made available to develop an art and culture centre in Kuranda.”

Mr Mirosevich was appointed as the new CEO in October with the agenda of sourcing funding and providing economic development advice to the Djabugay Board to guide decisions relating to future business matters.

Now the organisation’s CEO position is filled, all details concerning the direction and funding of Djabugay, including the fate of its cultural park, will be presented at its AGM on Sunday.

“Djabugay members who attend the AGM will be able to participate in determining the future vision of the cultural centre and the Djabugay nation,” Mr Mirosevic said.

“With a bright future ahead, the Djabugay Board would welcome two energetic and enthusiastic Djabugay members to become additional board directors in determining how Djabugay will use the pledged investment funding.”

Djabugay will hold its AGM at Nyawarri Estate in Kuranda from 10am on November 20.
