ONE of the city’s newest education facilities featuring “innovative” learning spaces has helped a major construction firm win the prestigious Master Builders Far North Project of the Year award.

From aspirational homes to state-of-the-art education facilities, Far North builders proved their skill and craftsmanship, at the 2022 Master Builders Housing an Construction Awards, presented at Pullman Cairns International Hotel on Friday.

The organisation’s regional manager Sharon Vella said the calibre of entries was nothing short of exceptional, despite the ongoing trade and materials shortages and price hikes hampering the industry.

“From modern retail spaces, educational amenities and medical facilities to stunning renovations and state-of-the-art home builds, this year’s entries were inspirational,” she said.

“It’s a true testament to the quality and range of building that happens in and around the North Queensland region.

“Winning an award this year, despite the stresses our industry is facing, shows that our builders are resilient and can continue to shine, even when times are tough.”

The multi-level learning facility is spread over four levels, incorporating a learning environment together with traditional and innovative contemporary learning spaces for students.

The key design features included two-storey colonnades with tiered seating, a fully equipped commercial cafe and plaza areas.

Bryant’s Cairns director Dan Fragg said he was proud of the project because it was delivered during challenging market conditons, without a moveable completion date.

“We had to finish in time for the 2022 (school) intake, and we managed that with the labour and materials shortages,” he said. “We had to think outside the square and redesign certain elements quickly. At one stage there we had about 130 people per day working on the site, which is impressive for Far North Queensland.”
