From a rotating set and singing tea cups to a classic fairy tale romance, Julia Macalpine Dance Studio will present A Tale as Old as Time at the Cairns Performing Arts Centre on Saturday, December 7.
Julia Macalpine Dance Studio production manager Emma Allen said the show, choreographed and directed by Shannon Treanor, would follow the familiar story of Beauty and the Beast, with a twist.
“It’s pretty much still the straightforward Beauty and the Beast story, however we’ve woven our own little love story into it, so it’s just a little bit of a different take,” Ms Allen said.
A cast of 60 performers ranging from three years to 18 years old, will take to the stage, performing ballet, tap, jazz, modern, contemporary and acrobatic numbers.
Studio owner Julia Macalpine said she was excited to see the students’ reactions to the handmade set and costumes, including a rotating castle that splits in two.
“We have been working for months, very long hours just to pull the prod side of things together,” Ms Macalpine said.
“And it’s a two-storey building, so there are people that actually up and down that, there’s a fight scene on it, people coming out and waving out of windows. It’s visually stunning.”
She said the show would incorporate musical performances and acting.
“There’s a bit of everything, so there will be some songs from the musical and some not from the musical because we have to incorporate tap, acre,” she said.
Tickets for the matinee performance at 1pm and the main show at 7pm, are available via Ticketlink.
