Two Cairns gym buffs have swapped the dumbbells for the pavement as they attempt to run for 24 hours to raise awareness for men’s mental health.
Local fitness enthusiasts Jayden Pue, a part-owner of BLVE Fitness, and Beau Berg will complete a 100km loop along the Cairns Esplanade from Muddy’s Cafe to Fogarty Park from 6am, Saturday, November 9 to 6am, Sunday, November 10.
For Mr Pue, raising awareness for men’s mental health is personal.
“It’s something that I, from my own personal experience, I’ve always shied away from speaking up and talking about it, even to this day, so just doing this right now is something that is massive,” Mr Pue said.
“I think that more guys, everyone needs to speak up and be more vulnerable and tell people what they feel and where they want to go and bring the community together and share it.”
Mr Pue and Mr Berg encouraged anyone who wanted to join, to run alongside them, donate to the cause or support from the sidelines.
“We’ve raised nearly $1000 and our goal is $3000, so, at the moment, I’m super stoked with the progress, and that’s just within the gym community,” Mr Pue said.
Mr Berg said the pair, who completed the Cardiac Challenge earlier this year, had been training for a few months to prepare for the BLVE 24 Hour Movember run.
“I’m not a runner, so there will be stops in between – we won’t be running for the whole 24 hours. We’re not that good,” Mr Berg said.
“Our aim is to run 140km, anything over that is a massive achievement for us, but yeah, we’re not runners, we’re just having a go.”
Mr Pue said there would be live entertainment for supporters at Muddy’s from 7pm including live music and a glow stick party.
“Just come down, bring the kids, and get involved,” he said.
“We’ll be running as well, so, it’s a nice way to bring people together.”
