The driver of a car that crashed his vehicle down a river bank has been flown by helicopter to Cairns Hospital in a stable condition.
Just after 2.20pm on Friday emergency services were called to the Captain Cook Highway at Shannonvale after a car left the roadway and careened down a steep bank of the South Mossman River.
Two Queensland Fire and Emergency Services were at the scene which was originally reported as a vehicle fire.
Initially a man aged in his 30s was trapped in the car and fire crews used the jaws of life to extract him.
The man was the only occupant and the car was the only vehicle involved in the crash.
A Queensland Police Service spokeswoman said though some smoke was emanating from the car it was not on fire.
The Department of Transport and Main Roads advised at 2.20pm both lanes of the road were closed to traffic just south of Mossman, however by 3pm the road had reopened.

Earlier police at the scene were turning northbound cars around at the Rex Range turn off.
The vehicle has not been reported as stolen.
The latest crash in the area follows the death of Mount Carbine mine worker Andrew Hogarth who died when his Toyota HiLux left the Captain Cook Highway and rolled down an embankment at the Cassowary Creek Bridge, 2km south of Mossman on February 11.
An earlier truck rollover on the Mulligan Highway at Mount Carbine closed the road for about an hour.
At 2.40pm Queensland Traffic advised the road had reopened.
The driver involved in the crash was not injured.
