The young daughter of a Cairns woman who was tragically killed in a family violence incident on Tuesday is being cared for by her maternal grandmother and aunty.

A fundraiser by Jasmin Bolt, the sister of victim Krystel Paul, raised more than $30,000 in a single day after it was launched on the weekend.

Ms Bolt wrote the purpose of the fundraiser was to make sure Ms Paul’s nine-year-old daughter was financially secure after becoming ophaned by the tragedy.

“Mum and I will be looking after her daughter, we’re trying to navigate through this hard time and I need to make sure (she) is financially secure for her future, to help with schooling moving forward,” he wrote.

Ms Bolt also thanked the public for their “kind words and support” during an incredibly difficult time for the family.

Police and emergency services crews were called to a Verbena Drive, Mount Sheridan address about 7.15pm on Tuesday for a welfare check.

When they arrived, police officers found the owners of the home, married couple Krystel and James Paul, both 41, dead inside.

Authorities suspect Ms Paul was tragically shot dead by her husband before he took his own life.

It is understood Ms Paul had told people close to her that she had been planning to leave the relationship in the lead up to her death.

Ms Paul was a well-known business owner in Cairns, opening her own bridal gown boutique in the city in 2019.

Following the tragedy, Leichhardt MP Matt Smith made an empassioned plea to the community to stamp out family and domestic violence, while revealing he knew Ms Paul personally.

“She was funny, she was kind and she was beloved by her co-workers – my friends – and my heart goes out to them.

“I feel immense sadness for her daughter whose life will never be the same.

“But I’m also angry. This shit has got to stop,” he said.

“Domestic violence is an absolute scourge and we’re seeing far too many lives lost.

“And when I attend rallies, marches, events ... I find myself significantly outnumbered women to men, so there needs to be more male voices in this space.”
