Friends of Far North fisher Jesse Casas gathered at Cairns Pier on Friday night and threw a line into the water in memory of their lost mate, as his mother struggles to come to terms with his loss.

Mr Casas died in a fishing accident at Cairns Marlin Marina on Tuesday, October 25.

His passing has sent a torrent of sorrow through the local community, showing he made an everlasting positive impact upon those who threw a line into the waters of life with him.

“It sucks that it seems to be the good ones to go first,” said Kallan Peebles, a good friend of Mr Casas, who organised the public devotion.

“Jesse was the most kind-hearted person I know. He would do anything for anyone, even when most never did anything back.

“He always had a smile on his face, especially when he was holding a fishing rod. He always surprised us when he would say ‘I’ll catch the biggest fish you’ve ever seen’, and almost every time he did just that.”

The hurt of his mate’s passing was overwhelming, Mr Peebles said.

“Jesse was more than a good friend, he was someone you would call his brother. Sorry, I can’t do much more, I’m still hurting really bad from this and even typing this is making me cry.”

Mr Casas’ mother Jodie Agars said the loss of her son has had a crushing effect on her family.

“I’m still getting over the shock … I’m so confused with the whole thing,” Ms Agars said.

“His younger brother is not handling it at all, he’s just in pieces. It would have been seven or eight years since he’s seen him.”

A fundraiser through a GoFundMe page set up by Mr Casas’ brother, Brody Casas, has now generated half of the costs associated with Mr Casas’ premature passing, including the funeral and transport of his ashes.

The family hopes to raise $5000.
