A vehicle fire that spread to bushland in Cooktown has been deemed suspicious by the police, with fire crews kept busy in the Far North extinguishing two vehicle fires in the space of just over two hours.

A spokeswoman for the Queensland Fire and Rescue Service said they received reports just before 6am on Saturday morning that a vehicle was on fire on the side of the Mulligan Highway near Cooktown.

It took three fire crews just around an hour to contain the blaze, which had spread from the car and ignited grass and bush nearby, said the spokeswoman.

The fire was extinguished around 7am, she said, but crews were called back to the scene in the afternoon for monitoring.

A spokesman for the Queensland Police Service said the car was reported as abandoned by the side of the highway around two weeks earlier.

He said it was believed the vehicle fire was deliberately lit and police were investigating.

Far North fire crews were also called out to another car blaze a little over an hour after the first fire was put out.

Around 8:15am, a fire crew was called to Portsmith in Cairns following reports of a ‘well-involved’ vehicle fire in Tingira Street.

No one was inside the vehicle when crews arrived and the fire was extinguished by 8:40am and handed back to its owners, the spokeswoman said.

She said the cause of the Portsmith fire was not known and was not related to an accident.
