From running naked through Belgium and attempting to run on water, Australia’s own Forrest Gump is now running from Cairns to The Cape — in socks.
Long distance runner Ben Ferris will run 1000km in socks, beginning at the Cairns Eye along the Esplanade and finishing at the tip of Queensland, Seisia, in around two weeks time.
Mr Ferris, also known as Ferris Gump, said he had been hitting the pavement for more than 20 years.
“I’ve always been a long distance runner,” Mr Ferris said.
“As I get older, I’ve realised time is precious so I’m being selective with places I run until I can get enough sponsors to run the full length around Australia.”
Mr Ferris, who makes his own running socks from car tubes, said the idea came to him about five years ago.
“I was running for a lot of big brands and charities but the thing is, I’m running half a metre from trucks and cars, so it can be quite dangerous if I get hit by a truck or something,” he said.
“I figured people are not really going to know what legacy I stood for and what was in my heart and the sock idea was born from that.”
Mr Ferris, who once ran on water via a water paddle, said he wanted to inspire others to create with purpose.
“I give out socks to all the kids in the towns I visit,” he said.
“There’s obviously a lot of struggles and pressures in life, especially if you’re young and not going to university, so I’m trying to help provide an opportunity for people to find purpose.”
Mr Ferris began his journey from Cairns to Seisia on Wednesday.
