Residents across the Far North will cast their votes to decide who will represent the seats of Leichhardt and Kennedy in the 2025 Federal election. LIVE RESULTS

The Australian federal election is being held today, with voting closed from 6pm.

The Far North has two federal seats, Leichhardt and Kennedy.

Residents will be voting for 10 candidates in Leichhardt.

Follow live results as residents in the electorate of Leichhardt cast their votes in the 2025 federal election.

Leichhardt extends north from Cairns along the ‘Marlin Coast’ between the Atherton Tablelands and the sea to Mossman, before spreading out to include Cape York north of the Mitchell River and all of the Torres Strait Islands.

Around 80 per cent of the electorate’s voters live on the coastal strip running north from Cairns.

Leichhardt is a far distant regional seat where sitting members can entrench themselves, which is exactly what Liberal Warren Entsch has done.

First elected in 1996, the only time he wasn’t elected since was on his temporary retirement in 2007, returning to win again in 2010.

Mr Entsch is retiring at the 2025 election which again gives Labor a chance.

The new LNP candidate is Jeremy Neal. High profile former Cairns Taipans basketballer Matt Smith is runnning for the ALP.

There are 10 candidates this election, including (in ballot paper order) Nicholas James Nigel Daniels for Legalise Cannabis Australia, Robert Hicks (Pauline Hanson’s One Nation), Lloyd Russel (Libertarian Party), Daniel Collins (Katter’s Australian Party), Matt Smith (Australian Labor Party), Les Searle (Family First), Jeremy Neal (LNP), Norman Miller (Independent), Phillip Musumeci (Queensland Greens), Greg Ian Dowling (Trumpet of Patriots).
