The man hit by a car and killed at Mossman last weekend has been by fondly remembered by co-workers for his smile and enthusiasm and will be greatly missed.

Emergency services were called to South Mossman at about 9.10pm on Saturday, November 23, following reports a pedestrian had been struck by a white Holden Colorado ute while crossing the Captain Cook Highway.

The pedestrian, 29-year-old Ryan Murphy, originally from Cooktown, died at the scene.

The driver of the ute was not physically injured and rendered assistance to the pedestrian before emergency services arrived.

The team at the Mossman Port Douglas Sharks Recycling Centre where Mr Murphy worked posted a tribute to their employee this week.

It’s understood Mr Murphy had been going through a hard time and was sleeping rough when offered a job by Containers for Change Mossman manager Kerrie-Anne Gregory.

“Ryan had said he felt his life was improving for the better since working with us and was feeling purposeful again enjoying and sharing in the challenge and passion of recycling and waste reduction,” she said.

“Ryan came in to the depot dressed ready for work the day I interviewed him and he started immediately on the job.

“He was a lovely young man and we were all very fond of him for his friendliness and good nature.”

Ms Gregory said Ryan was a diligent and hard worker who fitted in with the team instantly.

“I had a soft spot for Ryan as he reminded me a lot of my late son Troy who passed away 12 months ago – another free spirited young man,” she said.

“Unfortunately we lost a great team member on that fateful evening.”

Ms Gregory said the upcoming sunset cruise staff Christmas party would offer a chance for all employees to process their loss.

“We will all take some time to reflect Ryan’s life whilst the sun sets,” she said.

“We would like to extend our sincere condolences to Ryan’s family, friends and partner, Samera.

“RIP Ryan Murphy, you have left us with a hole in our hearts.”

Officer in Charge of Mossman Police Station Sergeant Matthew Smith said it was a dark section of road and any driver wouldn’t be expecting pedestrian traffic at that time.

“(The pedestrian) has just made a poor decision.”

Forensic Crash Unit investigations remain ongoing.

The latest incident is the second pedestrian fatality in Mossman within four months and follows the death of 37-year-old woman Mossman local Marckara Shuan outside a Junction Road butcher shop in August.

Any witnesses or anyone with relevant dashcam vision is urged to come forward.
