A Far North Queensland family has been left heartbroken after their mother’s ashes were stolen from a Cairns cemetery.
Police began investigating the theft after it was reported Mona Sheils ashes had been taken from a burial wall at the Anderson Street Cemetery, between December 4 and 6.
Initial reports suggest the plaque area was damaged during the incident and the ashes, belonging to Mrs Sheils, were taken.
Ms Sheils’ daughter said it has been more than 13 years since her mother died and this situation had cause immense distress.
“We can’t think of any reason why someone would do this,” she said.
“Especially at this time of year, being so close to Christmas.”
The ashes were contained in a cream-coloured urn, which has a label underneath displaying personal details.
“Everyone loved mum, she was such a selfless, kind and loveable person. This cruel act of vandalism has really upset us all,” she said.
“We just want to be able to find mum’s ashes and put her to rest again.”
Authorities, along with the Sheils family, are urging the public to come forward with any information that may assist in locating the stolen urn.
Anyone with relevant information is encouraged to contact local police.
Investigations are continuing.
