Firefighters worked to rescue a man trapped in his car after it crashed into a water-filled ditch at the corner of Lyons Street and Ray Jones Drive in Portsmith.

Using equipment to cut through the vehicle’s roof, emergency crews freed the man, believed to be in his 70s and semi-conscious on Sunday, March 2.

Five Fire and Rescue crews and a team from Queensland Ambulance Service were on scene shortly after 11am.

A Queensland Ambulance Service spokeswoman said the man’s condition was initially unclear as the rescue was still underway.

“We know there is one male patient, who is expected to have some injuries,” she said.

“He is responsive, but we have some concerns.”

A Queensland Fire Department spokesman confirmed crews had cut through the vehicle’s roof about 11.30am.

“A man is trapped inside his car after it crashed into water,” he said.

“Crews are cutting the roof of the car open to access the patient.”

The man was taken to Cairns Hospital in a stable condition just before 12pm following the rescue.
