A Cairns primary school was plunged into lockdown as police took a man into custody near the scene.
Edge Hill State School sent a message to parents about 11.30am saying the lockdown was a “precautionary measure”.
“The police are attending a situation on Pease Street,” the message read.
“Everyone is safe and well.”
Police were called to the scene shortly after 11am on reports of a man causing a disturbance.
A QPS spokeswoman said one person was taken into custody shortly after and was assisting police with inquiries.
“No one was injured,” she said.
This publication understands the incident occured near the corner of Russell and Pease streets, out the front of the school.
Shortly after 12pm Edge Hill State School sent another message to parents and carers advising the lockdown had been lifted on advice of police.
It marks the school’s second lockdown in as many months after police responded to a shooting in the leafy suburb in late March.
On March 28 police declared an emergency situation in Edge Hill under the Public Safety Preservation Act, and residents were told to stay indoors with their doors and windows locked.
The two incidents are unrelated.
A Department of Education spokesperson said classes resumed as normal in the afternoon.
“The safety of students and staff is the department’s highest priority,” they said.
“Staff, students and members of the school community were safe during this time.
“Parents and carers have been informed and support is available at the school for anyone who requires it.”
