Five teens have led police on a dangerous pursuit through Cairns following the alleged carjacking of a Mitsubishi ASX at knifepoint and the attempted theft and ramming of another vehicle.
Cairns detectives have charged the group with a total of 72 property related offences following the string of offences on Thursday.
Police allege at 12.15pm the 50-year-old owner of red Mitsubishi was allegedly threatened by a boy with a knife before getting behind the wheel and driving away.
The driver of the stolen car, according to police, then made attempts to ram a Nissan Qashai off the road in Westcourt in an alleged effort to steal another vehicle.
Fleeing from that scene the stolen ASX was spotted driving dangerously on Mulgrave Rd where at the corner of Aumuller St in Bungalow the vehicle was intercepted by police.
The Tactical Crime Squad was deployed and could be seen on dramatic body-worn video chasing one alleged offender across Mulgrave Rd at the corner of Winkworth St before the runner was taken into custody.
Another youth was arrested after a foot chase involving members of the Cairns Dog Squad and three teens in the back seat of the car were also apprehended by police.
The stolen Mitsubishi sustained panel and tyre damage and was towed from the scene.
A police vehicle was also damaged and a detective sustained a minor injury during the arrest.
A 15-year-old boy was charged with two counts each of burglary and dangerous driving, four counts each of unlawful use of a motor vehicle and stealing, six counts of attempted stealing, and one count each of armed robbery and attempted armed robbery.
A 17-year-old boy was charged with one count each of armed robbery and attempted armed robbery, receiving tainted property, burglary and stealing, three counts of unlawful use of a motor vehicle and five counts of attempted stealing.
Two 16-year-old Edmonton girls were each charged with two counts of unlawful use of a motor vehicle, one count each of armed robbery and attempted armed robbery and five counts of attempted stealing.
All five young people were remanded in police custody and are expected to appear in Cairns Children’s Court on Friday.
This month 82 vehicles have been stolen throughout the Cairns area after 108 cars were stolen in October.
