For Custard frontman Dave McCormack, returning to Far North Queensland has always felt like coming home.

Despite growing up in Brisbane, the Bluey star said there was something special about the region, inspiring him to write the song I Love You FNQ for the band’s latest album, Suburban Curtains.

“We landed and the humidity, it wasn’t full summer but it was very pleasant, the way the light was playing, the width of the streets and after being in all the narrow crowded streets down south, I wanted to capture that,” he said.

“As soon as we landed and went to the hotel room, I bashed out the song – I never felt such a feeling as being at home as when I do getting back to Queensland after so long away.”

Best known for his role as Bandit Heeler in the hit TV show Bluey, McCormack said there had been a steady rise in the band’s popularity.

“Because I do the voice of Bandit, a lot of people know about Custard now through that, so it’s cool. It’s a different audience,” he said.

“There are people who were teens when we started in the 90s who are bringing their teens along, so we’re really enjoying it at the moment.”

While he remained tight-lipped on Bluey content, McCormack said he would be keen to be involved in any new projects.

“We’ve done about 150 episodes, but they (producers) never tell me much. It’s usually just email to say, oh we’re doing this, but I’d love to do more. I’m into it.”

Custard will take the stage at the Edge Hill tavern on Saturday, December 14.

Tickets are available via Oztix.
