From cultural performances to exotic cuisine and music, hundreds flocked to Cairns’ major multicultural festival at Fogarty Park on the weekend.
Organised by the Cairns and Region Multicultural Association, locals and immigrants alike flocked to the Cairns Esplanade to celebrate cultural diversity in the Far North.
Among the performers were Measina, Treasures of Samoa who travelled down from the Atherton Tablelands for the event.
Noa Bajramovic, whose daughter took part in the Measina dance performance, said it was important for families to continue to showcase their culture to their children.
“They’re going to perform three dances, including a traditional knife dance and other ‘normal’ dances,” Ms Bajramovic said.
“We’re just trying to bring the girls up in our culture while we’re away from our home country so they don’t lose (the connection).”
Ms Bajramovic said maintaining a connection to culture was a good way to help children find where they belong.
“It’s so they know where their roots are, where they come from and where their ancestors are from as well,” she said.
“We want them to, if anything, learn and be raised in the culture and traditions of our country and also to learn respect and be humble.”
